A postcode area covers many towns and can cross a county or council boundary, so an area can appear under more than one county. Your council is decided by your address, not your postcode. Local government in England is being reorganised, and some of the councils named here are due to merge. Check your council's own website for who handles parking on your street.

What to plan for on a move in England

Parking on the day

On a busy street the vehicle needs a reserved space, and suspending a parking bay is booked with the council that runs the road. Where a county has both a county council and district councils, which of them handles parking varies, so ask early.

Clean Air Zones

Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield, and Newcastle with Gateshead run Clean Air Zones. Each decides which vehicles pay, and some charge older vans and lorries, so ask your mover whether their vehicle complies. GOV.UK has a checker for any vehicle and zone.

Completion day

When you buy, the keys are released once the money reaches the seller's solicitor, which on a chain is often the afternoon. Load the day before or in the morning, and plan the unload for when the keys are likely to arrive, not when you would like them.

Long distances and drivers' hours

A lorry driver's time at the wheel is limited by law, and Cornwall to Northumberland can be more than a day's legal driving. A long move is planned with an overnight stop or two drivers, and the delivery day follows from that.

Lanes, hills and old towns

Lake District passes, Peak District villages, Devon and Cornish lanes and historic town centres cannot always take a large lorry to the door. The goods then travel the last stretch in a smaller vehicle, which is better planned than discovered.

Leaving England

Road moves to Europe cross from Dover or through the tunnel at Folkestone, with ferries also sailing from ports such as Harwich, Hull, North Shields, Portsmouth, Poole, Plymouth and Newhaven. Container freight leaves through Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway and Liverpool.

Questions about moving in England

Who do I ask for a parking suspension in England?

The council that runs your street. In a county with one council for everything, that is the council named on the card above. Where there is a county council and district councils, either may handle parking, and the council's website will say which. Apply as soon as you have a date, because each council sets its own notice period.

Will my removal van have to pay a Clean Air Zone charge?

Only in a city with a charging zone, and only if the vehicle does not meet that zone's standard. Zones differ in which vehicles they charge, so ask your mover whether theirs complies with the zone at each end of your move, because an unplanned charge tends to end up on the bill.

Why is London not on this page?

London has a page of its own, listed borough by borough and by postcode district, because a London move turns on things that do not apply elsewhere: red routes, the Congestion Charge, the ULEZ and 33 councils in one city. Moving in London.

Can you move me from England to Wales or Scotland?

Yes. There is no border to clear, so the move itself is the same as any long move in England. What changes is the paperwork around the property: Wales has Land Transaction Tax instead of Stamp Duty, and Scotland has its own tax and its own way of buying and selling.
