Inside the Congestion Charge zone.
Very few homes and a great many offices, so weekday loading competes with deliveries all day. Weekend moves are often simpler.
Postcode districts cross borough boundaries, so a district can appear under more than one
borough. The council for your address is decided by the address itself, not the postcode.
Five things every London move has to plan for
A place to park the van
On most London streets the vehicle needs a reserved space, and the bay outside
your door belongs to the borough council. Suspending it for the day is booked with
that council, which sets its own notice period and fee, so ask early. The council
on each card above is the one to ask.
Red routes
The red lines on London's main roads are Transport for London's, not the council's,
and stopping on them is banned except in marked bays at the times shown. A home on a
red route needs the loading plan worked out before the day, not on the kerb.
ULEZ, LEZ and lorry permits
The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered every London borough since August 2023, and
a van that does not meet its standard pays a daily charge. Lorries over 3.5 tonnes
come under the Low Emission Zone instead, and those over 12 tonnes also need a
Direct Vision Standard safety permit to work in London at all.
The Congestion Charge
Central London has a daily charge for driving in the zone during its hours. The
cards above say which boroughs it touches, but the edge runs along particular
streets, so check your address on Transport for London's map.
Flats, lifts and building managers
Much of London lives in flats. A managed building often wants the lift booked, the
move made within set hours, and sometimes proof of the mover's insurance first. A
mansion block with no lift and a turning stair decides the crew size more than the
number of boxes does.
Time on the road
A short distance in London is not a short drive. Crossing the river, the school run
and a single closed road can each add an hour, which is why a London move is priced
on time and access as much as on miles.
Moving from London to another country
A move abroad starts the same way as a London move, with parking, access and the
building, and then takes one of three routes. Europe usually goes by road, crossing
the Channel at Dover or on the tunnel at Folkestone. Further afield goes by sea, in a
container through a port such as Tilbury or London Gateway on the Thames, Felixstowe
or Southampton. Urgent or smaller consignments go by air, often through Heathrow.
Who do I ask for a parking suspension on moving day?
The borough council that runs your street, which is listed on each borough above.
Each council sets its own notice period and charge, so apply as soon as you have a
date. If your home is on a red route, the road belongs to Transport for London, and
the rules for stopping there are theirs.
Which council am I in if my postcode covers two boroughs?
Postcodes were drawn for delivering post, not for local government, so many London
districts cross a borough line. Your council is decided by your address. Your council
tax bill names it, and so does the council's own address search.
Does a removal van have to pay the ULEZ charge?
Only if it does not meet the ULEZ standard. The zone has covered all of London since
August 2023. Lorries over 3.5 tonnes come under the Low Emission Zone instead, and
those over 12 tonnes also need a Direct Vision Standard permit. Ask any mover you are
considering whether their vehicles comply, because an unplanned charge tends to end
up on the bill.
Is my street inside the Congestion Charge zone?
The zone covers the City of London and parts of Westminster, Camden, Islington,
Southwark and Lambeth. The boundary follows particular roads, so check the exact
address on Transport for London's map before moving day.
Can you move me from London to another country?
Yes. Europe usually goes by road, and further afield by sea or air, with the customs
paperwork planned alongside the packing. Start with the quote form
and choose the country you are moving to.
What if my area is not listed?
Places just outside Greater London, such as Dartford, Epsom, Watford or Brentwood,
often share a postcode area with a London borough (Dartford is DA, like Bexley, and
Epsom is KT, like Kingston), but they sit in the surrounding counties and are not on
this page. We move there too, so use the quote form either way.
