Moving from the UK to India? Let Me Share What I’ve Learned About Costs, Scams, and Smart Choices
I’m Ben, and I’ve been helping people move from the UK to India since 2010—through our platform, we’ve connected over 850,000 people with certified movers, many of them heading to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, or Chennai.
Last month, a teacher from Bristol called me in a panic. She’d accepted a quote for £4,200—£2,000 cheaper than anyone else—to ship her two-bedroom home to Hyderabad. But when she tried to contact the company after paying the deposit, their phone went dead. Their website vanished a week later. She lost £1,500 and nearly missed her flight.
This is why I wrote this guide.
Because here’s the honest truth: price alone tells you almost nothing about what you’ll actually pay—or whether your belongings will even arrive.
The Real Cost of Moving from the UK to India (With Real Examples)
Let’s cut through the noise. You won’t find a single “average price” that’s useful—because your cost depends entirely on three things:
- How much you’re shipping (a few boxes vs. a full house)
- Where in India you’re going (Mumbai port is easy; inland cities like Pune or Jaipur add trucking costs)
- Whether you qualify for Transfer of Residence (ToR)—which can save you thousands in customs duty
Real moves I’ve seen in the last 12 months:
- The Sharma family (3-bedroom home, London → Delhi): Paid £7,800 with full packing, door-to-door service, and ToR clearance. Zero customs duty.
- A retired couple (1-bedroom flat, Manchester → Chennai): Paid £4,100 for a shared container. They qualified for ToR but didn’t know it—so they paid £2,900 in unexpected customs fees. That mistake still bothers me.
- A student (personal effects only, Glasgow → Mumbai): Paid £1,200 via air freight. Fast, simple, and made sense for a short-term stay.
So yes—prices can range from £1,200 to £12,000+. But the real question isn’t “how cheap can I go?” It’s: “What’s the smartest way to move without losing money, time, or peace of mind?”
⚠️ The Biggest Mistake I See (Over and Over)
People focus on the headline quote—and ignore customs.
India charges heavy import duties on household goods—unless you qualify for Transfer of Residence (ToR) status. If you’ve lived outside India for at least 2 years, and you’re returning to live there again, you likely qualify.
But here’s what trips people up:
- You must ship within 6 months of your return date
- You need proof of residence abroad (like utility bills or tax returns)
- Your shipment must arrive after you land in India
In 2025 alone, I’ve spoken to at least 12 families who shipped before sorting this out—and got hit with £3,000–£6,000 in surprise duties.
💡 My rule: Never book a mover until you’ve confirmed your ToR eligibility. I’ll help you check—it takes 10 minutes.
How to Spot a Fake or Risky Mover (Before You Pay)
Scams are rising. The pattern is always the same:
- Professional-looking website
- Quote 30–50% below others
- Pressure to pay full deposit upfront
- Disappear after payment
✅ Red flags I watch for:
- No FIDI-FAIM or BAR Overseas certification
- Won’t name their Indian partner agent
- Refuse video calls or in-person surveys
- Ask for more than 25% deposit
I only connect people with one of our three certified partners—all hold FIDI-FAIM, BAR Overseas, and five other industry certifications, and have moved hundreds of families to India. They’re part of the AGM Group network, which means their work is independently verified.
